well..
TimTams and flavoured milk would definately be the two things i'm missing over here.

did you know that south australia has the biggest (maybe the only) sugar free flavoured milk range? and two different companies produce it! - and farmers union out sells cocacola in SA.

Hey "roscoep77", I completely agree with you on the origins of the cocoa used in Haighs' chocolate.

However, in this post I'm talking about local food culture - and within that context Haigh's is one of my preferences. They're a family owned, South Australian company with a strong history and a delicious product that's made a couple of suburbs to the north of my house - that's local.

However, the primary ingredient of their product can not be grown successfully in Australia, so it is imported. As with the majority of chocolate producers around the world, the way in which the cocoa beans are sourced is a contentious issue. Over the longer term, I'm hoping that Haigh's will make a commitment to sourcing their beans from fairly managed plantations. They aren't perfect, but I do feel that they rightfully have a place within a strong regional food culture.

Well, at least you have a thriving wine culture there so you don't have to be reliant on the newest vintage of Beaujolais Nouveau. So it shouldn't be that hard to carouse with your guests especially in the wine region whilst still staying loyal to the local cuisine. :)

BTW, it just so happens that the Alko personnel is in strike starting today. So much for this years BN...

Where does the Cocoa come from that goes into the Haigh's chocolates? Australia? I don't think so. Probably some poor farmer in South America.
