The Other Side

We’re coming through to the other side of winter which means that the lean months of our regional organics box will eventually be over. Once you count today’s delivery which included two little white cabbages, we currently have 4 varieties of cabbage in our vegetable drawer (Chinese, red, white and Savoy). What I would really like though is some normal kale or Cavalo Nero – despite our relative proximity to Italy there is none to be found in stores or markets here.

Next year I tell myself, I’ll plant some. Which means I have to remember to sow the seeds by July at the latest.

Today’s box wasn’t too bad though. Feldsalat (corn salad) and parsley roots (a little different from parsnip) and only one of the black radishes that confound me.

There was cress too, that I’ve learnt to use as soon as possible.

A couple of weeks ago on Ask Metafilter there was a post about how to enjoy cottage cheese. I had never really tried cottage cheese before, but prompted by the outpouring of devotion to the humble white curds I bought a tub, and finished it off in a day by eating crisp bread with radish sprouts, cottage cheese and Cholula hot sauce.  I am now a fan.

So on my free day today I’ve mostly been eating avocado and cottage cheese on crispbread, with a pot of rooibos tea on the side.
